[luː'θuːliː], Albert John, südafrikanischer Politiker, * im heutigen Simbabwe um 1898, ✝ Groutville (Natal) 21. 7. 1967; entstammte der Familie des Zuluchiefs (Zuluhäuptlings) von Groutville, war Lehrer und Methodistenprediger. 1935 ernannte ihn die südafrikanische Regierung zum Chief in Groutville, setzte ihn jedoch im November 1952 ab, weil er den Protest des African National Congress (ANC), dessen Mitglied er 1946 wurde, gegen die Apartheid unterstützte. Im Dezember 1952 zum Präsidenten des ANC gewählt, trat Luthuli für Gewaltfreiheit ein und befürwortete die Zusammenarbeit mit der Kommunistischen Partei. 1956 wegen Hochverrat inhaftiert, musste er 1957 freigelassen werden. Mit dem Verbot des ANC wurde Luthuli 1960 zu einer Haftstrafe verurteilt, später mit einem Bann belegt, der u. a. seinen Zwangsaufenthalt in Groutville verfügte. 1960 erhielt er den Friedensnobelpreis, den er 1961 in Oslo entgegennehmen konnte. Luthuli schrieb »Let my people go« (1962; deutsch »Mein Land, mein Leben«).
